I am endlessly intrigued by the news I read about Apple, Google and Facebook; the Titan Trio of today’s tech world. I began my career in technology 25 years ago this month. In August of 1985 I went to work for a small consulting firm in Boise that has long since gone out of business. In 1985 the technology world was ruled by IBM. Microsoft was still a relatively small, privately owned company (they went public in 1986) and wasn’t a serious contender (yet). And no one, except maybe Al Gore, was seriously considering the Internet for anything other than that new fangled e-mail. Like THAT was ever going to catch on.

Then in the 90’s Microsoft blasted into the business office with Windows 3.11 (Windows for Workgroups) and combined with Lotus 1-2-3 to serve a knockout blow to IBM. By the end of the 90’s Microsoft Windows, Dell Computers and AOL were becoming the way people associated with technology.

Now, 10 years later, it’s much much different. Today it’s Apple technology, Google’s search technology and the undeniable draw of Facebook. Microsoft still owns much of the technology world, but their presence is becoming more and more diminished and they find themselves fighting from behind on many important fronts (ie; mobile technology, search, etc.).

There are all sorts of interesting developments happening today. One of the most interesting is the metamorphosis of the desktop to the laptop to the mobile device to the table or slate (aka iPad). People are trying to find that perfect device, where they can carry with them all the digital content of their lives as well as connectivity (to the internet as well as cell phone coverage). Laptops are too big to use as phones, phones are too small to use as laptops. It’s interesting to me how it’s evolving and how RAPIDLY it’s changing. Apples iPhone changed the rules, and now Google’s Android phone is working on blowing it out of the water.

One thing to me is certain, the ruler of the current technology war must have something else to offer. With Apple, you’ve got the iPhone, iTunes, the iMac and iPad. Apple rules the entertainment world with iTunes and music. In other words, they do more than just a phone. They help you carry your life with you and stay connected. With Google you get your search, e-mail, calendaring and it all ties seamlessly into your Android phone. Once again, they do more than phones .. they offer all sorts of services and tie it together for you.

I think with so many options, people want simplicity. That want all their stuff in one place. They want their social profiles, phone contacts, e-mail, documents, music … everything … on as few devices as possible. And those few devices need to freely synchronize their information with each other, so that we can switch between them easily.

In my opinion, the next “800 Pound Gorilla” in the tech world will not do just one thing well. It will do all the things we consumers need to be mobile and connected well. And put it all in once place for us. If a technology company only does one thing … I think they should be worried.

Well today we’ve “officially” launched My Fine Art Studio. I use the quotes because MyFineArtStudio.com has actually been functional for more than a month in beta with two VERY understanding and patient customers. But today I sent out a Facebook post to let everyone know it’s there. For some reason, this makes it feel more “official”. I also placed an ad in the Boise Weekly with hopes of attracting more artists.

At the same time, if you’re reading this blog post — then you’re also visiting the newly redesigned Wiregroove Technology website. We had to do something different to showcase the different products we’ve been rolling out over the last year. Navitopia, Lawnch Solutions (formerly known as Green Team Systems) and My Fine Art Studio are all products owned by Wiregroove Technology. I hope the new design appeals to you. As always, if it does, tell someone you know. We’ll build them a website too!

Check back to this blog from time to time as I’ll be posting things relating to not only our products, but also technology related items that you might find useful in your everyday life.

Thanks for visiting.

- Casey
